形态描述：多年生草本，高15-35厘米。茎不分枝或分枝，有短柔毛，基部木质化，干后灰棕色，有纵沟纹。叶纸质，长椭圆形或卵形，长9-45毫米，宽5-25毫米，先端急尖，有短尖头，基部宽楔形，全缘，表面深绿色，被疏伏毛，背面光绿色，被较密伏毛，两面中脉被密伏毛，叶面干后表面棕色，背面灰绿色，中脉在背面稍凸，背面边缘被一缘脉环绕；叶柄长2-10毫米，茎下部叶的叶柄较长，上部叶的叶柄短或近于无柄，被毛；托叶2片，钻状，长4-7毫米，宽约1毫米，不对称，近基部一侧耳状延伸，无毛，背面叶脉凸出。穗状总状花序，长4-11厘米；总花梗和花梗密被短柔毛；苞片2，膜质，钻状，长2毫米，宽0.5毫米，不对称，近基部一侧耳状下延，背面有微凸的数条脉纹；花梗长1.8-8毫米，中部有小苞片2片；萼片片5，深红色，披针形，长约6毫米，宽约1毫米，上部急尖，宿存，外面3片萼片质较厚，有数条凸起的脉，边缘被具腺头的刚毛；花瓣5，白色或淡紫色，具细爪，长1.2-2厘米，旋转排列，早凋；雄蕊5，花丝基部合生成管，长达5毫米；退化雄蕊5，线形，长约1毫米，与雄蕊互生；腺体5枚，与雄蕊管近基部合生；子房3室，无毛，每室有胚珠2枚；花柱3，长于雄蕊，柱头头状。蒴果膜质，具1种子。花期6-9月。
